As soon as Haiti's independence was proclaimed, the first Haitian leaders felt compelled to adopt the Eurocentric norm of civilization in order to be recognized and thereby secure a place in the great family of civilized nations. They made considerable efforts to prevent any possible objection by demonstrating that they could rely on a presumption of reciprocity and capacity in international relations. Yet their efforts always seemed insufficient. They were condemned to produce proofs of their civilization in vain, like the Danaids condemned in the underworld to endlessly fill a leaking barrel. In the absence of full recognition, probably hindered by the racialization of international law, the Haitian state long had to settle for partial recognition, made necessary by the commercial pragmatism of the period.
Depi endepandans Ayiti te pwoklame, premye dirijan ayisyen yo te santi yo oblije adopte nòm euro-santik sou sivilizasyon an pou yo te ka jwenn rekonesans epi pran plas yo nan gwo fanmi nasyon sivilize yo. Yo te fè gwo efò pou anpeche nenpòt objeksyon posib, yo te chèche montre yo te kapab apiye sou yon prezonpsyon resipwosite ak kapasite nan relasyon entènasyonal yo. Sepandan, efò yo te toujou parèt ensifizan. Yo te kondane pou pwodui prèv sivilizasyon yo anven, menm jan ak Danaid yo ki te kondane nan lanfè pou ranpli san rete yon barik ki gen twou. San rekonesans konplè, petèt akoz rasyalizasyon dwa entènasyonal la, Leta ayisyen te oblije pandan lontan kontante l ak yon rekonesans pasyèl, ki te vin nesesè akoz pragmatis komèsyal epòk la.
