Return to Haiti remains an important aspiration for many Haitian migrants. It lies at the heart of their project and migration cycles. More than a simple migratory aspiration, it is even a project for some. In the face of chronic sociopolitical crises in their country of origin, retirement is considered the ideal moment for the materialization of this project. A qualitative survey conducted in the Ottawa-Gatineau region among Haitian migrants showed that this return project is associated with a logic of sedentary transnationalism and forms of citizen participation invested with symbolic meanings arising from their migratory experiences, particularly from the migrant condition. The transnational way of life they envisage presupposes a political status that guarantees the ability to move across borders. This article highlights this way of life and the transnational social practices associated with it.
Retou an Ayiti rete yon aspirasyon enpòtan pou anpil migran ayisyen. Li chita nan kè pwojè yo ak sik migratwa yo. Pi plis pase yon senp aspirasyon migratwa, li menm tounen yon pwojè pou kèk moun.
